344th Combat Support Hospital

The mission of the 344th Combat Support Hospital is to provide resuscitation, initial wound surgery, and post-operative treatment, return-to-duty those soldiers in the combat zone (CZ) who fall within the corps evacuation policy, and/or stablize patients for further evacuation.

The 344th Combat Support Hospital is assigned to the 8th Medical Brigade in peacetime, and will be assigned to a medical brigade or group when mobilized for federal service. At full strength, the 344th Combat Support Hospital provides: hospitalization for up to 296 patients, consisting of 8 wards providing intensive nursing care for up to 96 patients, 7 wards providing intermediate nursing care for up to 140 patients, 1 ward providing neuropsychiatric care for up to 20 patients, and 2 wards providing minimal nursing care for up to 40 patients; resuscitative surgery and medical treatment of critically injured, ill, or wounded patients requiring highly specialized care which will prepare them for further evacuation; surgical capacity based on 8 operating room tables for surgical capacity of 144 operating room table hours per day; consultation services for patients referred from other medical treatment facilities; echelon I combat health support for organic personnel; pharmacy, clinical laboratory, blood banking, radiology services, and nutrition care services; physical therapy support to patients; medical administrative and logistical services to support work loads; and dental treatment to staff and patients and oral surgery support for military personnel in the immediate area, plus patients referred by area dental units.

Organized April 1918 in the National Army as Base Hospital Number 83 at Fort Riley, Kansas. Demobilized 3 May 1919 at Camp Dix, New Jersey. Reconsituted July 1923 in the Organized Reserves as General Hospital Number 83, and allotted to the Second Corps Area. Organized 1925 in New York. Redesignated 29 June 1929 as the 83d General Hospital. Ordered into active military service 15 August 1942 at Camp White, Oregon. Inactivated 23 November 1945 at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey. Redesignated 30 January 1948 as the 344th General Hospital, and assigned to First Army. Activated 13 February 1948 at Brooklyn, New York. Relocated 31 January 1968 to New York City. Relocated ??? to Fort Totten, New York. Reorganized and redesignated ??? as the 344th Combat Support Hospital.
