Fort Meade's reputation as a community of excellence is due in part to its diversity. Members of each of the services work together and with their civilian counterparts to accomplish a wide variety of missions. Their individual efforts contribute to the success of the community as a whole. One unit recently recognized for its commitment to excellence is the 818th Maintenance Company (Direct Support) of the 326th Maintenance Battalion, 99th Reserve Support Command. The the approximately 170 soldiers of the 818th have been recognized as the best maintenance unit in US Army Forces Command by winning the Army Award for Maintenance Excellence for fiscal year 2000. The company beat other first-class units within its battalion, group, command and component to win the honor. The competition did not distract from the unit's primary mission of providing direct-support-level maintenance to the many units within the 99th RSC. These include Fort Belvoir,Va., Fort Story, Va., Owings Mills, Md., Baltimore and Fort Meade.

The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 28 July 1969, consisting of three tongues of red enameled flame on top of a black enameled stylized anvil, surmounting two black enameled sledge hammers, in saltire divided in three segments terminating at corners of the hammer heads all above a gold scroll bearing the inscription "SUPERIORITY IN SERVICE" in black letters. Crimson is the primary color used for Maintenance Battalions. The three tongues of flame refer to the organization's three battle honors earned in World War II. The red flame is further symbolic of the energy and zeal applied by the troops in performance of the maintenance mission, while the anvil and hammers refer to the tools of maintenance and to the basic mission of the organization.
