3rd Battalion (Reception), 413th Regiment
The 3rd Battalion, 413th Regiment (Pasadena, CA) - provides Reception Station support to the Active Army at Fort Jackson, SC, Fort Bliss, TX and Fort Sill, OK. Getting Individual Ready Reserve [IRR] soldiers back onto active duty requires speed, flexibility - and lots of paperwork. In the Timberwolf Division, the job falls to the 3rd Battalion (Reception), 413th Regiment, based in Pasadena, CA. In a mobilization scenario that involves calling up the IRR, 3-413's mission is to deploy here and process the incoming throngs of recalled reservists, ensuring that their pay, health and service records, ID cards, uniforms and equipment, and a myriad of other details are all up to date.
It's not glamorous work, but everyone in 3-413 understands that it's vitally important. By all accounts, 3-413 is one of the very best at what it does. The battalion deployed a task force to Ft. Knox to help process new soldiers arriving for basic training, and made a tremendous impression on the members of the 46th AG Battalion - the active-duty reception battalion 3-413 was supporting.
The battalion's approximately 180 soldiers are divided into Headquarters & Headquarters Company and three line companies (A, B and C). HHC has the most soldiers - about 125 - and probably the weightiest mission. Its sections are responsible for the actual processing of incoming IRR soldiers. Supporting the process is HHC's ADP (automated data processing) section, which helps set up the battalion's computer network and link them into the Army's RECBASS (Reception Battalion Automated Support System). RECBASS allows 3-413 to dump data about processed soldiers directly into the Army's national system. The mission of A, B and C Companies' drill sergeants is "pushing the troops through processing to get them on the trucks and downrange," (i.e., into refresher CTT and MOS training from other Timberwolf battalions).
There's a lot more to it when dealing with IRR soldiers, who in a mobilization scenario may have been involuntary recalled from blissful civilianhood just a few days earlier, and everyone in 3-413 understands that.
