299th Brigade Support Battalion
299th Forward Support Battalion
"Lifeline"

The mission of the 299th Forward Support Battalion was to, on order, deploy and provide Combat Service Support (CSS) and Combat Health Support (CHS) to 2nd Brigade Combat Team and other divisional units located in the Brigade Support Area, 1st Infantry Division. The Battalion would conduct rear operations as required to protect critical Combat Service Support assets and sustain internal operations. The mission of the 299th Brigade Support Battalion remained roughly the same, though it was more suited to the role being organic to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team.

The 299th was constituted on 23 March 1966 in the Regular Army as the 7th Support Battalion and assigned to the 199th Infantry Brigade. It was activated on 1 June 1966 at Fort Benning, Georgia. It was later inactivated on 15 October 1970 at Fort Benning, Georgia, and relieved from assignment to the 199th Infantry Brigade. It was concurrently redesignated as the 299th Support Battalion.

In October 1983 the 299th was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division and activated in Germany. In August 1991 it was inactivated in Germany, but was reactivated 16 February 1996 in Germany.

As part of the transformation of the 1st Infantry Division (Mechanized) to the Army's new modular force structure, the Division Support Command (DISCOM) was inactivated. Its units were split between the reorganized and redesignated modular brigade combat teams and the Division's Sustainment Brigade. Forward Support Battalions, including the 299th Forward Support Battalion, were to be reorganized and redesignated as Brigade Support Battalions under the transformation. Brigade Support Battalions were integral elements of the modular Brigade Combat Teams, whereas previously they had only been attached during operations to the Division's brigades.

In March 2008, the 2nd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division was inactivated, as was the 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division. Elements of the 2nd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division in Germany were reflagged as parts of the 172nd Infantry Brigade (Seperate), while elements of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division were reflagged as the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, which subsequently reactivated at Fort Riley, Kansas. The 125th Forward Support Battalion was reflagged as the 299th Brigade Support Battalion, which was subsequently reactivated.
