It was relieved on 16 March 2008 from assignment to the 1st Infantry Division and assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division. This shift was part of the transformation of the 1st Infantry Division to the US Army's new modular force structure. Artillery battalions previously assigned to the Division Artillery (DIVARTY) were inactivated and reactivated as integral elements of the brigades they habitually supported. The 1st Infantry Division's DIVARTY was subsequently inactivated.

In March 2008 the 2nd Brigade also cased its colors in Germany and was reorganized and redesignated the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, before being reactivated in April 2008. 1-7th Field Artillery relocated along with the rest of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team to Fort Riley, Kansas.
