165th Military Intelligence Battalion
The 165th Military Intelligence Battalion, less one company, held an inactivation ceremony on 25 August 2006 in Darmstadt, Germany. The last remaining company was inactivated following its return from Iraq in 2006.
The 165th Military Intelligence Battalion was first constituted on 27 September 1951 in the Regular Army as the 165th Military Intelligence Service Detachment. The Detachment was activated in Japan on 18 October 1951. The Detachment was reorganized and redesignated on 1 September 1952 as the 165th Military Intelligence Service Company. The Company was reorganized and redesignated on 28 March 1954 as the 165th Military Intelligence Company. The Company was inactivated on 25 January 1958 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
The unit was reactivated on 1 June 1962 in Germany took up the mission of providing intelligence support to units in the State of Hessen. The Company was reorganized and redesignated on 1 July 1972 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 165th Military Intelligence Battalion. The Battalion was inactivated 1 July 1983 in Germany.
The Battalion was redesignated 16 April 1984 as Headquarters, Headquarters and Service Company, 165th Military Intelligence Battalion, and activated in Germany with its organic elements concurrently constituted and activated. E Company (Long Range Surveillance), 51st Infantry was activated and attached to the 165th Military Intelligence Battalion as V Corps' long range surveillance company on 16 September 1986 and permanently assigned to the 165th Military Intelligence Battalion in October 1988.
The 165th Military Intelligence Battalion deployed to Bosnia in support of Operation Joint Endeavor from December 1995 to November 1996. The Battalion was presented with the Army Superior Unit Award and the National Intelligence Meritorious Unit Citation as a result of the support it provided to deployed forces during that period.
Elements of V Corps received orders to deploy to Kuwait in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. According to Stars and Stripes in a story on 2 January 2003, the 94th Engineer Battalion, the 22nd Signial Brigade (including the 165th Military Intelligence Battalion), the 205th Military Intelligence Brigade, and the 3rd Corps Support Command were to be depart for Kuwait in the coming weeks.
The 165th Military Intelligence Battalion (less one company, which deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom) subsequently deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, returning from that deployment in February 2006.
