1st Battalion - 171st Field Artillery (MLRS)
1-171 FA (MLRS) is headquartered in Altus with units located across Southwest Oklahoma.
The 1st Battalion, 171st Field Artillery, was organized on February 11, 1942 as a 105mm Towed Howitzer Battalion at Camp Barkley, Texas as a result of the reorganization of the original square 45th Infantry Division. It deactivated on December 7, 1945.
The unit reactivated on September 1, 1946 as an element of the 45th Infantry Division. It was ordered to active duty for the Korean War on September 1, 1950. It was released from active duty on May 31, 1952.
The unit reactivated on October 14, 1952 with HQ at Ada, OK. It deactivated on May 1, 1959.
On April 1, 1963, the unit reactivated as a105mm Towed Howitzer Battalion at Anadarko, OK. It was reorgainzed on February 1, 1968, as a Target Acquisition Battalion upon deactivation of the 45th Infantry Division.
On March 1, 1980, the unit was reorganized to 8" Self-Propelled Howitzer Battalion.
The unit reorganized on December 1, 1991 to a Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) Battalion with Battery C from TX ARNG in Wichita Falls, TX to become one of few multi-state units.
On September 1, 1999, the unit reorganized from a 3x9 to a 3x6 MLRS Battalion and stand-up a new Battery C from within the battalion. The Wichita Falls unit reorganized back under the Texas ARNG.
The 1st Battalion, 171st Field Artillery (MLRS) completed the fielding process at Camp Gruber in June 2001 of the Advanced Field Artillery Tactical Data System (AFATDS) fire support system.
