The 151st Field Artillery Regiment was originally organized in 1864 as the 1st Regiment, Minnesota Heavy Artillery. After the Civil War, the Regiment commenced its reorganization and in 1893, the 1st Battalion Field Artillery was organized.

In 1900 it was redesignated the 1st Field Artillery and three years later was expanded to six batteries. The 1st Field Artillery served on the Mexican Border from 1916 to 1917.

On August 5th, 1917, the organization was drafted into Federal Service and subsequently was redesignated the 151st Field Artillery. The 151st Field Artillery served in World War I and earned Battle Streamers for Lorraine, Champagne, Champagne-Marne, Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, and Meuse Argonne. The 151st returned to the United States and was demobilized on the 10th of May, 1919.

On February 10th, 1941, the 151st was again mobilized into Federal Service as part of the 34th Infantry Division. On January 1st, 1942, the 151st embarked for Europe and received Battle Streamers for actions in Tunisia, Napples Foggia, Anzio, Rome-Arno, North Appennines, and Po Valley. On the 3rd of November, 1945, the 151st arrived in Newport News, VA, onboard the USS Monticello. The battalion was home.

On January 16th, 1951, the 151st was activated for the Korean War and was sent to Camp Ruker, (now Fort Rucker) Alabama where it conducted extensive training. The battalion was not sent overseas as a unit and on the 16th of January 1953 was demobilized. Upon arriving back in Minnesota, the 151st FA was assigned to the Minneapolis Armory. Due to changing military concepts and needs, the division underwent three major reorganizations within a ten year period.

The last major reorganization occurred in 1990 when the 175th FA Battalion was deactivated and the 151st FA Battalion became the general support Field Artillery Battalion for the 34th Infantry Division.
