SCAMP 8U253 Rocket Launcher (PU)
The rocket launcher (PU) is a self-propelled 8U253 fighting machine on a special crawler-terrain, performed with the use of components and assemblies artsamohoda ISU-152K and T-10. The unit is designed for firing at ground targets at ranges up to 2,500 km two-stage solid-fuel ballistic missiles 8K96 with thermonuclear warhead capacity of 1 Mt. The machine is highly mobile and can be for a short period to relocate from one area to another position. PU moves together with the rocket placed in a special protective container type "foam", in the stowed position located horizontally. PU is designed for vertical launch missiles and equipped with a container lifting device with a rocket for its installation on the launch pad, cantilevered on the installation of the stern.
The rocket launcher 8U253 provides transportation of the 8K96 rocket in running order on the starting position, the installation of the missile on the launch pad, its verticalization and guidance in a given direction, conduct pre-launch operations and launch directly. The launcher can be used as a part of the complex - a group or independently. Fighting vehicle can independently reach the target area with a missile, with a short time to prepare and carry out its run, then return to the base, load and run a new missile launch from another district. In addition, the installation can be hidden in ambush, and then suddenly launch a missile attack on the enemy.
The unit is equipped with two types of radio - near and far range. The launcher rocket launcher with a missile 8U253 8K96 is flexible in the application of a model of nuclear missiles for medium-range shooting.
The rocket launcher is a self-propelled tracked vehicle and consists of a housing, a power plant, transmission, caterpillar tracks, lifting the container, the launch pad, the lifting mechanism and the container lowering, supporting jacks, set the aiming devices and screening and launch equipment, electrical equipment , communications equipment, auxiliary and peripheral equipment. The body is a welded metal PU, receiving all loads both when driving and when starting the rocket. In the front of the housing is box-shaped cabin crew.
The power pack is located behind the wheelhouse and is separated from it by a partition. It includes: motor, air, fuel and oil tanks, and other units and units of the power plant. In the same department housed units and transmission mechanisms (main clutch, gearbox, etc.). Track mover consists of two tracks, two drive wheels, two guide wheels with the track tensioning mechanisms supporting sixteen and ten supporting rollers.
On the front hull are two large viewing window of the driver and the installation commander. Below the windows are mounted spare truck, enabling the crew to repair the tracks in the field. Wheelhouse roof, in the center, is in the shape of the tray, in which fits the container with the rocket, which can significantly reduce the size of the installation height. On the roof is also installed boxes for accessories and radio antenna. The launcher is equipped with a ladder fastened to starboard cabin. The sides of the cabin, the front part of it, are the door to the landing crew.
Inside the cabin, front left, is the place of the driver, and the next - the installation commander. For the driver's seat mounted folding seat numbers of fighting calculation machine. Across from them, starboard, established operator's seat, his control and other verification-starter equipment. It is intended for prelaunch maintenance, inspection and control of the various systems and to ensure the rocket launch. Another officer's chair is set for the right cabin door.
Teh setup Crew is 5 people: the installation commander - a sergeant, a driver and three combat crew numbers. The total number of seats in the installation is 7. In the case of stand-alone use, the PU installation crew is increased from 5 to 7 people. Additionally taken on board an officer and radio operator (for special communication). Command installation goes to the officer. PU electric serves autonomous power supply of all its instruments, mechanisms and systems, providing work at the facility at night. Electrical equipment consists of a source and electricity consumers, instrumentation and auxiliary electrical devices. As a means of communication with the calculation of numbers on the launcher used intercoms.
The transport container is a drop-down along the metal foam. It serves to protect the missile during transport and to install it on the launch pad. the 5 locks that hold the cover are located on the right side of the container. A sixth is located on the nose of the container. Locks are managed remotely. The missile container stacked on the support platform in a horizontal position by a crane. In front of the lower half of the container compartment is mounted with an electric heating device warhead missiles. The heating system is designed to maintain, if necessary, the temperature of the missile in a predetermined range of values during its presence in the transport container.
The mechanism of lifting and lowering the rocket containers adapted hydraulic actuator. Two telescopic hydraulic jacks are located on the sides of the middle part of the launcher. The aft, on the port side, there are primary and backup hydraulic pumps. They are driven by the power take-off mounted on the power transmission launcher. Starboard tank installed (oil tank) to supply hydraulic fluid. Flap valves to control hydraulics rocket launcher located in a niche below the oil tank and closed the hatch. Behind, on the aft hull plates mounted two support hydraulic jacks for posting and cross-leveling system.
The support jacks are lowered to the ground after the occupation of installing a starting position. Before that, under these set reference tareli that in the stowed position mounted on the sides of the launch pad. In the stowed position, the container is fixed in front of the two locks controlled wheel. The container rests on two shock-absorbing supports. The container launch pad is pivotally secured to brackets welded to the stern of the hull. In the horizontal position, the container is sealed with a launch pad two locks that are opened in the upright position of the container.
When installing a container (with rocket) to the upright (combat) position it turns to the launch pad. The container can be raised and lowered while being connected to the table, and without it. Container lid Drive only when the vertical or horizontal position of the container. The actuator cap is small hydraulic jack located on the container body in its middle portion left. Upon reaching the vertical position of the container opens to the left side. The container in the open form is lowered into the horizontal position and locked. The rocket is on the launch pad.
In the firing position the launch pad has no bearing on the ground, and is based on the body of the launcher. This allows the verticalization rocket on the launch pad by varying the height of one of the two installation poles, which reduces the time spent on this operation. Furthermore, such design does not require leveling mechanism. Starting table equipped with windscreen mount missiles. Wind ties are removed just before starting. At long stay rocket on the launch pad or when wind speed exceeds the maximum operational status, hiding rocket transport container.
Selection of flight mission for the rocket performed remotely from the operator panel. The rocket is made remote control. Start-up and control cables are smaller hatch, located next to the control panel hatch hydraulic system, lower the oil tank. Cable Length starting panel of about 100 m. The calculation of carrying out missile launch takes cover in an open special protective trench. In case of emergency, missile launch can be executed directly from the cutting jet installation without the use of a remote control panel.
