Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

Il-48 (Ilyushin)

At the end of 1949, the project of the new medium-sized front-line bomber Il-48 with two TR-3 engines was completed. Its design used some of the solutions found in the design of the IL-30.In particular, the aerodynamic and structural layout of the wing was borrowed. The use of a new two-gun fodder plant IL-K8 with increased angles of fire allowed to abandon the upper rifle tower and reduce the number of crew to three people. The chassis design has significantly changed, in which four pillars of the main supports, pairwise located in the engine nacelles, were retracted into compartments with a 90-degree turn of the wheels. One is on the flight, and the other is against. Work on this machine was interrupted in the summer of 1950.
