Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

Il-42 (Ilyushin)

The government task proposed urgently to begin designing an experimental IL-42 high-speed bomber with a swept wing and two TR-3A engines with a thrust of 5000 kg each. The work on this machine also turned out to be short-lived. The resolution of the USSR Council of Ministers that appeared in March 1951 stopped all work on this aircraft, despite the fact that by this time 50% of the working drawings had been issued and the construction of the prototype aircraft had already begun. Interesting design developments for the Il-42 and Il-48 aircraft were fully used in the design of the new Il-46 bomber and its modification of the Il-46S.
