Chemical Troops - Equipment
A significant characteristic of most NBC protective suits, including Soviet models, is the physical burden associated with prolonged wear, especially in warm temperatures. The suits are buUc and uncomfortable. When worn fully huttoned-up for an extended period of time in hot weather, soldiers become fatigued quickly and combat efficiency is lowered. In some cases, heat prostration may result. Accordingly, the Soviets have devised norms stipulating desired maximum lengths of time for various temperature ranges for wearing NBC protective suits.
In recent years, the troops have received various modern models of weapons and means of RCB protection: RHM-6 radiation, chemical and biological reconnaissance vehicles, TDA-3 aerosol countermeasures vehicles , heavy flamethrower systems on the tracked chassis TOS-1A "Solntsepek" (in addition to in service with TOS-1 "Pinocchio" ), modernized infantry flamethrowers PDM-A "Shmel-M" , as well as modern combat equipment - filtering protective kits "Nerekhta" and gas masks PMK-4 .
At present, the newest heavy flamethrower system on the wheeled chassis TOS-2 "Tosochka" is undergoing trial operation in the troops , which was first shown at the Victory Parade on June 24 . It was first used during the main stage of the Kavkaz-2020 strategic exercises at the Kapustin Yar training ground in the Astrakhan region. TOS-2 confirmed the requirements for it. According to Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, this system, which has an increased range and power, will significantly increase the combat capabilities of groupings of troops in strategic directions. TOS-2 is made on the basis of the Ural vehicle with increased carrying capacity and cross-country ability, and has an increased launch range for unguided rockets. Aiming, shooting and fire control are fully automated. In addition, it has a system of electronic protection against high-precision weapons.
"In addition to the heavy flamethrower system TOS-2 <…>, more than 200 units of special equipment are planned to be delivered to the troops, including RHM-6-01 RCB reconnaissance vehicles, equipment for special processing of KDA, and TDA-3 smoke vehicles. With this in mind, in 2020 the share of modern designs will exceed 70%" stated Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov Chief of the RKhBZ Troops of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. At the same time, industrial enterprises are working to modernize the existing TOS-1A to increase the security of the crews, increase the range and accuracy of fire, the power of the ammunition and reduce the time to prepare and complete tasks.
Another novelty for the troops is the RHM-8 radiation, chemical and biological reconnaissance vehicle , created on the basis of the Tigr armored car. For the first time it was shown at the international forum "Army-2019". "The use of this machine will significantly speed up the conduct of NBC reconnaissance, the collection, processing and transmission of data in real time to the command and control system, increase the efficiency, reliability and completeness of the detection of the RCB situation, the accuracy of forecasts," said the head of the troops Igor Kirillov.
In addition, development work is underway to create the main line of advanced weapons and RCB protection equipment, including robotic systems (comprising robotic and unmanned systems) and new generation gas masks designed using unique membrane materials. Russia occupies a leading position in the theory and practice of industrial chemical technologies, in the production of mineral fertilizers, artificial fibers, monomers and polymers, and medicines. Against this scientific and industrial background, the Russian troops of radiation, chemical and biological protection (RCBZ) are less advertised, and yet no less effective.
