On 11 March 2011, Japan experienced a 8.9 magnitude earthquake, which severely damaged the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. On 12 March 2011, an explosion blew the roof off of the nuclear plant's No. 1 reactor after the earthquake triggered an automatic shutdown of all six reactors. A second explosion on 14 March 2011 at the plant's No. 3 reactor caused severe damage to the reactor building. Also on 14 March 2011, the fuel rods in reactor No. 2 were almost fully exposed at one point when a pump pouring cooling seawater around them ran out of its own fuel. The facility suffered a third explosion on 15 March 2011, with rising fears of a meltdown of one or more of the plant's reactors.
