On 01 April 1980, the Fighter Squadron 04/007 "Limousin" was created at St. Dizier AB equipped with Jaguar, assuming the traditions of the Group of hunting 01/009. It joined the air Base of Istres (Bouches-du-Rhône) at the beginning of the summer 1980, and was dissolved on 01 August 1989. Assuming the traditions of the escadrilles Group of hunting 01/009, it was equipped with the Mirage 2000 N, on 08 June 1990, one 3rd flotilla, the SPA 96 "Le Gaulois" is joined with the E.C 03/004.
The principal mission of the squadron was until 01 July 1996 the nuclear mission of ultimate warning. Since this date, the squadron took the mission in the past assigned to Mirage IV P: the strategic nuclear mission. Modification of the Mirage 2000 N under the version K1 A/S in March 1991 was conducted with the assignment of a conventional secondary mission in March 1992. The planes are deployed in hardened shelters, and are equipped with ASMP missiles which are stored, assembled, and installed in planes, within DAMS (Dépôts d'armes et de munitions spéciales).
The American 9th Reconnaissance Wing's Operating Location France (OL-FR) at Istres flies the U-2 aircraft.
