CEA / Grenoble was created in 1955 and currently has about 2,600 employees. Principal activities include advanced technology, nuclear reactors, physical sciences and life sciences research. The center is officially civilian but the work conducted has military aspects.
Grenoble is France's second most important research site after Paris. Grenoble is also one of Europe's foremost scientific and technological centers in the fields of microelectronics, computer science, hydraulics, materials science, chemistry, paper engineering and nuclear studies. Basic Research in Grenoble accounts for some 10,000 jobs, many of them in the five large international laboratories and eight national centers, including CEA- Grenoble (Atomic Energy Commission), ESRF (European Synchrotron Radiation Facility), ILL (Laue Langevin Institute, CNET-France Telecom (National Center for Telecommunications Research) and the scientific universities. Grenoble has four Universities : Université Joseph Fourier (Science, Technology and Medicine), Université Pierre Mendes France (Social Sciences), Université Stendhal (Letters, Languages, Communication) and Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble (INPG) with nine engineering schools.
