Direction des Constructions Navales [DCN] Cherbourg specializes in submarines. It features impressive facilities for submarine design and construction using modular methods plus submarine testing. Products include France's new-generation nuclear ballistic submarines (Le Triomphant-class SSBNs), nuclear attack submarines (Améthyste-class SSNs), and diesel-electric or AIP submarines (Agosta 90B, Scorpène, and Turquoise-class SSKs).
DCN Cherbourg's recently modernized facilities cater for all aspects of submarine construction. Key resources include:
- design department for detailed design and fabrication draughting
- 40,000-m2 main hull workshop, with thick-plate forming machines, for the prefabrication of major structural elements
- covered workshop producing large prefabricated assemblies and modules and equipped with a 14,000-ton shiplift
- finishing department and workshops specializing in nuclear power plants
- 8 dry docks
- extensive high-tech workshops using modular construction methods
- test centre (CETEC) specializing in acoustic discretion, hull testing up to 200 bar, protection against corrosion, composite materials and operational safety.
