  • DEFENSE THREAT REDUCTION AGENCY DIRECTOR SELECTED May 19, 1998 -- Deputy Secretary of Defense John J. Hamre announced today the selection of Dr. Jay C. Davis, a physicist, to head the effort to stand-up the proposed Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) on Oct. 1, 1998. The new agency is to be formed by consolidating the On-Site Inspection Agency, the Defense Special Weapons Agency, the Defense Technology Security Administration, and some program functions of the assistant for the secretary of Defense for Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Defense Programs. The director, DTRA will report directly to the under secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Technology.
  • B-2 achieves 'consecutive miracle': May 19, 1998 (AFNS) -- The B-2 bomber Spirit of Louisiana dropped four 2,000 pound BLU-109 versions of the Joint Direct Attack Munition against three targets on the White Sands Missile Range April 28.
  • Air Force's newest space squadron runs space operations center - 13 May 1998 - (AFNS) -- 14th Air Force activated its newest squadron, the 614th Space Operations Squadron, operating the Space Operations Center. The squadron was first initiated as the 614th Space Operations Flight in April 1996, and the Space Operations Center was activated in Nov. 13, 1998.
  • NORAD turns big Four-O - 13 May 1998 - (AFNS) -- The North American Aerospace Defense Command, better known by its acronym of NORAD, turned 40 May 12.
  • Commanders will soon have space operations officers - 13 May 1998 - (Army News Service) -- Army field commanders will soon benefit from the integration of space systems and products, thanks to the expertise of space operations officers. The new functional area, FA 40 will be part of the Information Operations career field.
  • Advances in Computer Technology Make Export Controls More Difficult U. S. Department of Commerce Bureau of Export Administration May 4, 1998 -- Commerce Assistant Secretary Roger Majak and Dave Tarbell, director of the Defense Technology Security Administration at the Defense Department announced the release of a long-awaited study, High-performance Computing, National Security Applications, and Export Control Policy at the Close of the 20th Century. The study has been prepared as part of President Clinton's decision in 1993 to periodically assess U.S. computer export controls.
