UN official: Middle East region must be free of nuclear weapons

Damascus, April 7, IRNA -- President of the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly Ali Abdussalam Treki called for necessity of removal of nuclear weapons from the Middle East.

He made the remarks in a press conference after meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Vice-President Farouk al-Shara .

He said that a resolution had been issued by the UN for removal of the Middle East region from nuclear weapons, but it has not been implemented so far, while Israel possesses nuclear weapons now.

Treki continued that UN wants nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, so all resolutions in this concern must be implemented for all, and not just for a number of countries.

He called his meeting with President Assad 'important' and said that they discussed issues of Arab world, especially Arab problems in the UN.

The UN official said that unfortunately disputes in the Middle East, especially in Palestine, is a matter of concern in the United Nations and everyone should try to remove these disputes.
