Iranian Leader Urges Muslim Seat On UN Security Council

United Nations, 15 September 2005 (RFE/RL) - Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad has urged the United Nations to make sure that at least one predominantly Muslim country is represented on the UN Security Council.

In an address to the General Assembly on 14 September, Ahmadinejad said there are 1.2 billion Muslims in some 50 countries worldwide who have no representation at the highest level of the UN.

In what appeared to be a veiled reference to the United States, the Iranian president also said the UN should not stand for preemptive wars that are meant to ensure the security of one country at the expense of another. He said such threats take a physical and psychological toll on the people of the world.

Ahmadinejad said the UN could remedy such problems by shifting its discourse away from violence to mutual respect. He also called on the world body to promote spiritualism worldwide.
