Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has claimed that US President Donald Trump gave Russian President Vladimir Putin what he wanted with last month's summit in Alaska.
In a recent interview aired by ABC on Sunday, Zelensky claimed Putin was very keen to meet with Trump.
"He wanted very much to meet with President Trump, with the president of the United States," he said. "And I think that ... Putin got it. And, it's a pity."
Trump, who has met and spoken with Putin multiple times, has been seeking to have the Russian leader meet face-to-face with Zelensky. However, he has been unsuccessful in coordinating such a meeting between Putin and Zelensky.
Zelensky, an actor-turned-politician, has had two phone calls and a single face-to-face meeting with Putin, all in 2019.
He was not invited to the Alaska summit between Trump and Putin.
"It's a pity that Ukraine was not there, because I think that President Trump ... gave Putin what he wanted," Zelensky told ABC's Martha Raddatz in the interview with This Week.
Zelensky continued, "Putin doesn't want to meet with me, but he wants very much to meet with the president of the United States, to show everybody video and images that he is there."
He added that Putin "is playing games with the United States."
"You need ... to take off [Putin's] weapon," Zelensky said. "Energy is his weapon."
In the meantime, Trump has placed the onus on the Europeans to figure out how they want to manage their relations with Russia.
Trump blamed the progression of the deadly Ukraine conflict on the European countries by continuously "funding the war" through their ongoing purchases of Russian oil and gas.
Meanwhile, experts say casualty figures on both sides are staggering, reaching hundreds of thousands of soldiers killed and injured.
