Following Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's claim that Ukraine does not need China as a guarantor providing security guarantees, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said that the responsibility to avoid war was his own and "without China-a permanent Security Council member-and its guarantees, securing a lasting peace in any part of the world is immensely difficult. Zelensky should think carefully before speaking so carelessly," BelTa reported.

According to BelTa, the official Belarusian news agency, when asked about the possibility of Belarus also acting as a security guarantor for Ukraine, Lukashenko stated: "Typically, discussions of security guarantees involve permanent UN Security Council members. This includes powers like the United States and China, as well as major European nations that are not Security Council members - and even Belarus. But when this idea was raised to me privately, I had to ask: is it truly in our interest to provide such guarantees to another nation?"

On Chinese Foreign Ministry's Friday routine press conference, a reporter said Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov said on August 20 that Russia supports providing strong security guarantee for Ukraine and agrees not to exclude UN Security Council members, including Western countries and China, from providing the so-called guarantee. However on August 21, Zelensky said that Ukraine does not need China as one of the security guarantors. Commenting on China's view about this, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said that China has always held an objective and just position and has always been open and aboveboard on the Ukraine crisis, which is for all to see.

It is essential to pursue common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security and promote the political settlement of the Ukraine crisis, Mao said, adding that China stands ready to play a constructive role to that end.
