On 19 August, Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine Taras Kachka met with NATO Senior Representative in Ukraine Patrick Turner. During the meeting, the parties discussed the security situation in Ukraine and efforts aimed at achieving and ensuring sustainable and lasting peace in the country, particularly in the context of security guarantees for Ukraine.
The discussion also covered opportunities for defence cooperation between Ukraine and the Alliance. Patrick Turner noted that the conversation was not only about Ukraine's need for assistance but also about Ukraine's role as a full-fledged NATO partner in the security domain. He highlighted the rapid development of Ukraine's defence industry, particularly in the development and production of drones.
Taras Kachka urged allies to continue supporting Ukraine, including through financial assistance, to ensure the country's defence capabilities and resilience amid the ongoing full-scale war. In this context, emphasis was placed on the importance of implementing the Hague Summit decision, which commits to investing 5% of GDP annually in key defence and security needs until 2035. These investments will provide the forces, capabilities, and resources necessary for the Alliance's core tasks: deterrence and defence, crisis prevention and management, and security through cooperation.
Both parties agreed on the need to ensure the long-term capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. "We have already achieved a high level in enhancing our army's capabilities and intend to sustain this progress. A strong army, even in peacetime, is a vital component of Ukraine's security," the Deputy Prime Minister remarked.
The meeting also focused on expanding cooperation through existing mechanisms, such as the EU's SAFE financial instrument.
During the meeting, the Deputy Prime Minister informed the NATO Senior Representative about the implementation of domestic reforms necessary for Ukraine's preparation for EU membership and the initiation of NATO accession negotiations. Specifically, these included steps taken to strengthen anti-corruption measures, enhance integrity, transparency, and accountability in Ukraine's security and defence sector.
The parties agreed to maintain regular contact and intensify dialogue through NATO's Representation in Ukraine and the Government Office for Coordination of European and Euro-Atlantic Integration to coordinate cooperation, exchange information, and address urgent needs on Ukraine's path to NATO.
