The President at the meeting of the Coalition of the Willing: Ukraine's participation and security guarantees are key to achieving peace

On Wednesday, President Gitanas Nausėda participated in a remote meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, which discussed the situation in Ukraine and the upcoming meeting between the Presidents of the United States and Russia.

The Head of State emphasized that Russia's fourth year of war of aggression against Ukraine has a significant impact on the security of Europe as a whole. While efforts to end the war are welcome, they have to be based on terms favorable to both Ukraine and Europe.

According to Gitanas Nausėda, it is crucial that peace in Ukraine is not decided without Ukraine; therefore, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should take part in future meetings. Although Ukraine is ready for a genuine, fair, and comprehensive peace process, it cannot be required to give up its territories. Even more so, such a requirement cannot be a precondition for a ceasefire.

"A comprehensive ceasefire without preconditions is essential before any real negotiations can begin," said the Lithuanian President, welcoming the participants' unanimous agreement on the fundamental principles for achieving a lasting and sustainable peace in Ukraine.

President Gitanas Nausėda also underscored that comprehensive and reliable security guarantees for Ukraine have to form an integral part of any agreement.

"We need to be prepared to deploy forces to ensure security in Ukraine as soon as conditions allow," said the President, adding that Lithuania stands ready to contribute troops and military training capabilities to a joint force.

The remote meeting was attended by the heads of state and government of the Coalition of the Willing, as well as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Council President António Costa.

The Coalition of the Willing, established in February 2025 at the initiative of France and the United Kingdom, aims to support Ukraine's independence and sovereignty and to back a ceasefire once it is agreed. More than 30 countries, primarily NATO and EU members, participate in the coalition.
