Based on evidence collected by the Security Service, another ruscist has been sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment for war crimes against Ukrainian civilian population.
The convict is lieutenant colonel Dmitry Zharkikh, commander of the 8th artillery regiment of the russian black sea fleet's coastal defense.
According to the investigation, in December 2022 he commanded the shelling of the central part of liberated Kherson using BM-21 Grad multiple rocket launchers.
According to the investigation, residential buildings, a hospital and other social facilities in the city center were hit by the artillery strike.
As a result of the russian attack, at least 13 civilians were killed and more than 60 were wounded to varying degrees.
The massive strike on the frontline town was carried out by Zharkikh's subordinates from the left bank of Kherson region.
Subsequently, putin 'honoured' the 8th artillery regiment for the killing of civilians and destruction of social infrastructure in the regional center, awarding it the title of 'guards'.
Based on the SSU's investigation, the court found Zharkikh guilty under Articles 28.2 and 438.2 of the CCU (war crimes resulting in the death of people, committed by a group, upon prior conspiracy).
The investigation was carried out the SSU Kherson Office in cooperation with the State Border Service of Ukraine under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor's Office.
