On Monday, 4 August, as part of a working visit to Japan, Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, Taras Kachka, together with Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture Oleksii Sobolev, met with Japanese Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi.
The parties discussed a wide range of issues, including the expansion and deepening of strategic and economic partnerships between the two countries, progress on Ukraine's path to EU membership, Japanese investments in Ukraine's defence and security sectors, holding russia accountable, and other matters.
During the meeting, the Deputy Prime Minister briefed his Japanese counterpart on the latest key transformations on Ukraine's path to EU membership, particularly the strengthening of anti-corruption measures. He emphasised that a strong Ukraine as a full-fledged EU member aligns with the strategic interests of advanced democracies, including Japan.
"Successful economic cooperation between our countries is closely linked to Ukraine's progress towards EU membership. Adopting EU norms and standards not only drives internal transformation but also opens up increasing opportunities for attracting investment, expanding trade, and implementing joint innovative projects," Taras Kachka stressed.
The Deputy Prime Minister underscored that the consistent implementation of necessary reforms remains an absolute priority for the Ukrainian Government: "We will continue to pursue structural reforms, particularly in anti-corruption and the rule of law. In recent years, Ukraine has already achieved results in ensuring the independence and effectiveness of anti-corruption bodies and in judicial reform. We plan to maintain this high pace. For instance, last week, a law on the independence of anti-corruption bodies was adopted, and reforms to the Asset Recovery and Management Agency (ARMA) have begun, which is a key element of law enforcement work."
In this context, the official highlighted that the swift opening of EU negotiations on Cluster 1, which pertains to the rule of law, is particularly important for further consolidating Ukrainian society on the path of reforms.
"We already have detailed reform roadmaps in the context of EU accession and count on the support of all international partners to accelerate decision-making within the negotiation process," Taras Kachka noted.
He expressed gratitude for Japan's consistent support for Ukraine and stressed that such active political dialogue demonstrates that relations between Ukraine and Japan have reached a new level.
The Japanese Foreign Minister reaffirmed his country's unwavering stance in supporting Ukraine's transformations and reforms on its path to EU membership. Both sides expressed hope for the continuation and expansion of cooperation in the context of Ukraine's recovery.
