Foreign Minister Tsahkna: With total escalation, Russia is undermining all peace efforts

On 1 August, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna stated that Russia, through increasingly intense missile and drone attacks, is undermining the efforts of all countries calling for a swift end to the bloodshed in Ukraine.

"While much of the world — led by Ukraine, the United States, and European countries — is calling for a ceasefire, Russia continues its increasingly brutal airstrikes on Ukrainian cities," Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said.

"In July alone, Russia launched over 9,000 glide bombs, drones, and missiles toward Ukraine. On the night before the last day of July alone, these attacks killed at least 31 people in Kyiv — a European capital — including five children," the minister added.

According to Tsahkna, Russia's increasingly intense attacks against Ukraine's civilian population show that it disregards calls for peace from the international community. Instead, it continues its efforts to subjugate Ukraine in an especially cruel manner — not only on the battlefield, but through systematic aerial terror against cities and civilian infrastructure.

"Political and economic pressure on Russia must increase further. The 18th sanctions package adopted recently by the EU was very strong, and by tightening sanctions even more, it is possible to deliver a final blow to Russia's already struggling economy and strip it of the ability to continue its aggression," the foreign minister said.

"It is also essential to ensure that Ukraine has sufficient resources to stand up to Russia on the battlefield and has the air defense systems needed to protect its population. Germany's announcement today of delivering two Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine, as well as the additional military aid planned by NATO Allies, are the right steps — and a clear signal that support for Ukraine remains strong," Tsahkna said.
