The SSU Counterintelligence has thwarted plans of Belarusian special services to obtain intelligence data on the defense of Ukraine's northern border.

Proactive measures in Volyn led to the arrest of a Belarusian KGB agent who was spying on Ukrainian troops.

According to the investigation, the suspect is a 24-year-old local unemployed man who was looking for "easy money" on Telegram channels.

The agent agreed to carry out tasks for Belarusian special services, in exchange for money, including monitoring of the locations of checkpoints and fortified areas of the Defense Forces on the northern border of Ukraine.

In addition, following orders from the KGB, the suspect attempted to identify military trains moving along local routes or located at Ukrainian railway transit stations.

To gather intelligence, the agent walked around the area, recording the fortifications of the Defense Forces and marking their geolocations on Google Maps.

SSU officers have timely exposed the suspect, documented his crimes, and detained him at home.

During a search of the detainee's home, investigators have seized a phone with an anonymous chat in a messenger app, which was used to contact a Belarusian special services officer, who has already been established by the SSU Counterintelligence.

During the special operation, the bases and logistics routes of Ukrainian defenders have been also secured.

Based on the evidence collected, the detainee has been notified of suspicion under Article 111.2 of the CCU (treason committed under martial law).

The offender is in custody facing life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

The investigation was carried out by the SSU Office in Volyn region under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor's Office.
