The Security Service has prevented another terrorist attack in Ukraine. As a result of preemptive measures, the SSU detained an enemy agent who was preparing an explosion in an apartment building in Rivne.

According to the investigation, the perpetrator installed an improvised explosive device in a rented apartment in the city center on orders from russian special services.

By remotely activating the IED, the enemy hoped for a powerful explosion inside the high-rise building, which would result in deaths and injuries among civilians and spread panic in the region.

The SSU uncovered the ruscists' plans at an early stage and caught the terrorist red-handed as he was mining the apartment.

The detainee is a 27-year-old Lviv resident, recruited by russia through a Telegram channel offering 'easy money'.

After recruitment, he arrived in Rivne. Following the coordinates provided by his handler, he took a ready-made bomb from a cache and came to the rented apartment that was to be blown up.

After placing the explosives on a shelf, the agent set up a phone camera opposite it, through which the occupiers planned to record the explosion.

After the attack, he planned to lay low in another rented flat in Rivne and then flee to Lviv.

SSU investigators have notified the detained individual of suspicion under the Articles of the CCU:

  • 14.1, 27.5, 258.2 (aiding in the preparation of a terrorist act, committed by a group, upon prior conspiracy);
  • 263.1 (illegal handling of explosive substances).

The suspect is in custody and faces up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.

The operation was carried out by the SSU Offices in Rivne and Khmelnytskyi regions under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor's Office.
