US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose secondary tariffs of 100 percent on Russia if a peace deal is not reached with Ukraine in 50 days.

During a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House on Monday, the US president said he was "very unhappy" with Russia and "disappointed" in President Vladimir Putin over the lack of progress towards a deal to end the Ukraine conflict.

"We're going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don't have a deal in 50 days, tariffs at about 100 per cent, you'd call them secondary tariffs," he noted, adding that the tariffs would be "very, very powerful."

The US secondary tariffs are expected to target Russia's trading partners in a bid to isolate the country in the global economy.

Also during the meeting, Trump said the US will send weapons to Ukraine through NATO, which will pay for and distribute them.

The United States' "top-of-the-line weapons," including Patriot missile systems and batteries, would be arriving very soon, he pointed out.

Rutte, for his part, emphasized that Germany, Finland, Canada, Norway, Sweden, the UK, and Denmark would be among the buyers to supply Ukraine.

Russia launched what it called a special military operation in Ukraine in February 2022, partly to prevent NATO's eastward expansion after warning that the US-led military alliance was following an "aggressive line" against Moscow.

The Western countries have been escalating the war through the supply of advanced weaponry to Kiev.

Also on Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met US special envoy to Ukraine Keith Kellogg in the capital Kiev, where they discussed buying American weapons with European help.

In an X post, Zelensky said he was "grateful" to Trump for sending "important signals of support" for Ukraine.
