President Vladimir Putin has told his American counterpart Donald Trump that Russia will not "give up" on its aims in Ukraine, while also pledging "readiness of the Russian side to continue the negotiation process."

In a phone conversation that lasted about an hour on Thursday, Trump "again raised the issue of an early end to military action" in Ukraine, Putin's foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov said.

"Our president also said that Russia will achieve the goals it has set: that is, the elimination of the well-known root causes that led to the current state of affairs, to the current acute confrontation, and Russia will not back down from these goals," he added.

Much concerned about a durable solution to the war, Russians are avoiding what experts call 'negative peace' with Ukraine.

The Kremlin argues that it was compelled to engage in a military conflict with Ukraine to deter the country from joining NATO and prevent the potential instrumentalization of the Ukrainian leadership to strengthen the Western front against Russia.

The US president took office with a promise to end the war through diplomatic means but has failed to demonstrate consistency in his mediatory approach to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The conversation took place as the Pentagon reportedly paused the shipment of 30 Patriot air defense missiles, nearly 8,500 155mm artillery shells, over 250 precision GMLRS missiles, and 142 Hellfire air-to-surface missiles to Kiev.
