President of the Republic of Lithuania
June 02, 2025
On Monday, President Gitanas Nausėda met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine on the sidelines of the Vilnius Summit.
The two leaders discussed the situation surrounding a potential ceasefire in Ukraine, the need for stricter sanctions against Russia, and continued support for Ukraine in its defense against the aggressor.
"Lithuania stands—and will continue to stand—with Ukraine. We will continue to support Ukraine both in the face of Russia's ongoing aggression and in the context of any potential negotiations. Ukraine's security and defense are integral to the security of Europe as a whole," President Gitanas Nausėda stated.
The Lithuanian leader emphasized that Russia has clearly rejected a 30-day ceasefire, and underscored the need to step up pressure on the aggressor.
"We need to urgently impose new sanctions and adopt the 18th sanctions package that would strike at the heart of Russia's financial system. This should include major oil and gas companies such as Lukoil and Gazprom, Nord Stream 2, the ROSATOM corporation, all remaining Russian banking institutions, and the entire shadow fleet still operating," President Gitanas Nausėda underlined.
The Lithuanian leader stressed that the most effective way to strengthen Ukraine's position in any negotiations is through increased military assistance and credible security guarantees. According to the President, Lithuania consistently advocates—both at NATO and EU levels—that Ukraine's membership in these structures is a strategic investment in the long-term security and stability of Europe.
"Within the EU, we say that granting Ukraine membership by 2030 is the most effective long-term security guarantee the Union can offer. This target date must be clearly embedded in the mindset of EU institutions and member states. Without a doubt, Ukraine's path to EU membership will be a top priority for Lithuania during its Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2027," the President said.
The Lithuanian leader also emphasized his expectation for concrete and urgent contributions from all members of the Coalition of the Willing to strengthen Ukraine's armed forces. He underlined that Europe must take responsibility, act swiftly, and proceed with determination.
Gitanas Nausėda noted that the next package of Lithuania's support for Ukraine is scheduled for June-July. It will include the provision of specialized equipment and technology, along with a financial contribution of over €20 million to the Demining Coalition. This will be followed by the delivery of ammunition worth more than €35 million, as well as an additional €5 million earmarked for NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine program.
