Ministry of Foreign Affairs - Republic of Poland
24.02.2025
On 24 February 2025, Poland's top diplomat Radosław Sikorski took part in UN events organised in New York at three-year mark of Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
Minister Radosław Sikorski spoke at the resumed Eleventh Emergency Special Session of the UN General Assembly which resulted in the adoption, on the joint initiative of Ukraine and the European Union, of a UN General Assembly's resolution on advancing a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine. The General Assembly also adopted "The path to peace" resolution, proposed by the United States, with additional provisions put forward by Ukraine's European allies, including Poland.
In his speech to the General Assembly, Minister Radosław Sikorski pointed out that Moscow's actions are neocolonial in nature and jeopardise the international order based on the UN Charter. He noted that Russian forces had killed thousands of people in the course of war. They have indiscriminately bombed both military and civilian infrastructure—apartments, hospitals, schools, and kindergartens. War crimes have been committed. Thousands of Ukrainian children have been kidnapped and sent to Russia to strip them of their national identity. He warned the international community against normalisation of relations with Moscow.
Moreover, the minister spoke at the UN Security Council meeting on the situation in Ukraine, also on behalf of the High Representative of the European Union, Kaja Kallas. He declared that the EU is striving to achieve a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace for Ukraine, consistent with the UN Charter. He called for holding Russia responsible for the crimes it committed. Minister Sikorski reiterated that Russia's aggression has far-reaching repercussions all over the world, for example on global food and energy markets. He insisted that Russia should immediately, completely, and unconditionally withdraw its forces from Ukraine's territory.
The members of the Security Council adopted the "The path to peace" resolution put forward by the United States. It is the first UN Security Council document on the situation in Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion of this country.
