On Friday, President Gitanas Nausėda met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.
During the meeting, the President reaffirmed that Lithuania's support and assistance to Ukraine remain unwavering. He emphasized that Lithuania will continue investing in Ukraine's defense industry and providing the necessary arms. "Peace can only be achieved through strength," Gitanas Nausėda underlined.
Referring to possible negotiations, the Head of State noted that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine is unconditional and that strong security guarantees should be given to Ukraine. "The outcome of the war will have fundamental and long-lasting effects on European and transatlantic security. We must ensure sustainable peace and prevent the aggressor from further threatening Europe and the entire democratic world," President Gitanas Nausėda stressed.
The Lithuanian leader emphasized that Ukraine and Europe must be involved in any negotiations. "Europe has a lot to bring to the table. The full potential of sanctions against Russia and its allies has not yet been exhausted—tighter restrictions on Russia's shadow fleet, reducing energy dependence on Russia, and utilizing Russia's frozen assets to support Ukraine. We can do even more. Last year, through a NATO format, we initiated €10 billion in investment in Ukraine's defense industry. We also need to continue supplying arms," Gitanas Nausėda said.
The Lithuanian leader reiterated strong support for Ukraine's membership in NATO. According to Gitanas Nausėda, while temporary solutions may be considered, only Ukraine's NATO membership will provide a lasting and sustainable security guarantee.
