Budrys in Brussels: We must find ways to use frozen Russian assets to aid Ukraine

Republic of Lithuania - Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Updated 2025-01-27

On 27 January, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Kęstutis Budrys, is attending the European Union's Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels.

Prior to the Council meeting, the head of Lithuania's diplomacy told journalists that the meeting was also another occasion to talk about the continued pressure on Russia's war machine - the 16th sanctions package and ways to use frozen Russian assets:

"Lithuania's legal advice on this issue is that we have the legal way forward. We analyzed the issue thoroughly, and our approach is that Russia is in breach of international law. This means that the international community has the right to use countermeasures against those activities. One of those would be the seizure of the immobilized assets," Lithuania's Foreign Minister said.

The Foreign Minister also commented on the latest developments in the Baltic Sea:

"The very recent events in the Baltic Sea, the events of yesterday in the Baltic Sea, show us that the number of those accidents is too high for us to call those coincidences. Four accidents like this happened in one year. We must first investigate extensively and determine whether and, if so, which state actors were behind and respond appropriately. Today, we will discuss further measures needed to monitor the situation in the Baltic Sea and also to prevent or respond to incidents."
