Meeting his Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha in Kyiv today 15 January, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna underlined that Ukraine and its supporters have made the right decisions in fighting Russia's aggression, and staying the course is the only way forward.
"The formula for Ukraine's victory is simple - Ukrainians must be provided with military tools to repel Russia's brutal attacks. At the same time we must continue putting comprehensive pressure on Russia," Tsahkna said. "In the past three years or so, the right decisions have been taken and we must stay on this course. Ukraine must be helped to a position of power by providing it with weapons shipments without restrictions, while ramping up sanctions against Russia, deterring Russia's shadow fleet, limiting Russia's oil revenues and putting frozen Russian assets into use."
Tsahkna said Estonia was committed to providing long-term assistance to Ukraine, and supporting Ukraine on its path to the European Union and NATO. "A possible truce without functioning security guarantees would allow Russia to recover its strength and launch new attacks in due time," Tsahkna said. "Bringing Ukraine under the NATO umbrella is the most effective deterrence that would help bring lasting peace to Ukraine and Europe."
The foreign minister reaffirmed Estonia would continue rebuilding Ukraine. "With the reconstruction projects, we are contributing to mitigating the destructive impact of Russia's aggression on Ukrainians and offering them some hope for a better and safer future," the foreign minister said.
Today the foreign minister and the First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska opened two family homes in Zhytomyr, built jointly by the International Development Cooperation Centre of Estonia (ESTDEV) and the Olena Zelenska Fund (OZF).
The foreign minister also opened the Zhytomyr Human Rights Centre established with support from Estonia and met with Ukraine's Human Rights Commissioner Dmytro Lubinets. "The Human Rights Centre built with Estonian support will have an important role in exchanging prisoners of war, documenting human rights violations, and bringing back deported children," the minister said. "Russia must answer for its abhorrent human rights violations and the work of the Human Rights Centre will contribute to that."
