Today 10 January, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna met with his Lithuanian colleague Kęstutis Budrys in Tallinn, discussing support for Ukraine, security in the region, and progress with Baltic energy and transport projects.
"Estonia and Lithuania have a very similar understanding of the challenges relating to European security, and we also know that joint action makes us stronger and makes it more likely that we achieve our objectives," Tsahkna said, commenting on the relations between the two countries.
Speaking about security, Tsahkna welcomed NATO's decision to increase its presence in the Baltic Sea in light of recent damage to submarine infrastructure there. "This proves that NATO Allies are extremely serious about defending infrastructure and deterring attacks," the foreign minister said, adding that the increasingly serious security challenges once again demonstrate the need to boost defence investments.
The meeting extensively covered further support to Ukraine as Russia has not given up on its goal of destroying Ukraine and dismantling the current Euro-Atlantic security architecture. "Russia shows no signs of wanting to achieve peace; instead, it continues its efforts to destroy Ukraine," Tsahkna said.
"Ukraine's supporters cannot show the slightest sign of weakness, and they must continue their current actions with resolve, only with increased force and speed. This means military support for Ukraine and reinforced air defence. At the same time, pressure on Russia must continue through ramping up sanctions and deterring its shadow fleet," the foreign minister emphasised.
