Yesterday 23 September, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna attended the meeting of G7+ foreign ministers to support Ukraine's energy sector. The event was hosted by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani representing the G7's Italian Presidency and Ukraine's new Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha also attended.
Tsahkna told the meeting that Russia's aim was to destroy Ukraine's economy and resilience. "In cooperation with like-minded countries, we must offer the necessary support Ukraine needs ahead of the winter to defend and restore its energy infrastructure," Tsahkna said. "We cannot accept a situation where Russia can brutally destroy Ukraine's infrastructure. Ukraine must be given better tools for defending itself from destructive air strikes. At the same time, we must make efforts to mitigate the harsh impact if the war on the civilian population by restoring the energy infrastructure."
As part of the UN's high-level week, Nordic and Baltic foreign ministers met with their Ukrainian colleague to discuss military assistance to Ukraine and progress with the country's NATO and European Union membership. Additionally, a meeting of European Union foreign ministers was held in New York, where, in addition to Ukraine, the agenda included the increasingly tense situation in the Middle East.
Tsahkna also spoke at 50-in-5, a public event on digital infrastructure, and at an event on Belarusian political prisoners with Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, the leader of the democratic forces of Belarus. The foreign minister also announced Estonia would become Chair of the Freedom Online Coalition in 2025.
His bilateral meeting with Bahrain's Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Alzayani covered opportunities for developing political and economic cooperation between Estonia and Bahrain. They also spoke about the need to uphold the principles of the UN Charter because everyone's security would be ensured only by an international order based on these principles.
Today Tsahkna will speak at an event on multilateralism and at a meeting of the Group of Friends of Accountability. He will hold bilateral meetings with the foreign ministers of North Macedonia, Azerbaijan, Algeria, Philippines, the Technology and Science Minister of Zambia and the head of UN Habitat. Foreign Minister Tsahkna is also attending a transatlantic dinner on the invitation of the US secretary of state.
