US Pledges Support for Ukraine's New Cabinet

by Isabela Cocoli April 26, 2016

The United States pledged its support for the new Ukrainian government as it embarks on the road of major reforms and changes in the country.

U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland met Tuesday in Kyiv with newly-elected Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman and Chairman of Ukraine's parliament Andriy Parubiy.

"So we bring you congratulations and all best wishes from our leadership and from the American people as you start on this extremely important mandate for Ukraine, for your country and for a European future here," Nuland told reporters.

Groysman stressed that his government was committed to reforms and to leading the country out of the political crisis.

"I think today we'll have an opportunity to discuss the real course of things," he said. "As usual, I'm very glad to stress the support which the United States provides to Ukraine. We have been through a political crisis, we have finished it and we have a result – a re-formation of a new coalition in the parliament and a new government here. But the real course of things is still quite hard, and today it demands the maximum devotion on reforms and changes in the country. And we're concentrated on it."

Earlier this month, lawmakers voted overwhelmingly for Groysman, a close ally of President Petro Poroshenko, as prime minister. Parubiy replaced him as speaker.
