A State Council Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson on Wednesday slams the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities' latest move of increasing the spending of so-called "defense budget" in next year, saying the move drags Taiwan residents onto the secessionists war chariot, which poses the greatest threat to the safety and interests of Taiwan's residents, and "pursuing secession by forces" will inevitably lead to self-destruction.
Taiwan-based media claimed on August 21 that the island's "defense spending" will reach 3.32 percent of its "GDP" next year, claiming the increase underscores commitment to safeguarding security. The proposed "defense spending" for the fiscal year 2026 will reach NT$949.5 billion (US$31.18 billion).
In response, Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Zhu Fenglian said at a Wednesday press conference that the Lai Ching-te administration stubbornly adheres to a "Taiwan independence" separatist stance, pursuing the selfish interests of one party and attempting to achieve secession through by forces.
Zhu slams the DPP authorities disregarding public opinion in Taiwan, recklessly squanders public resources, promotes a "turning every resident as soldier" policy, and drags Taiwan's residents onto the Taiwan secessionists' war chariot, escalating tensions across the Taiwan Straits.
The spokesperson also blasted the DPP authorities acting as a "cash machine" for American arms dealers.
"The DPP authorities cater to external forces, wasting funds that could have been used to improve livelihoods and develop the economy on purchasing weapons and appeasing foreign powers," Zhu said, "This is not only futile but also pushes Taiwan toward disaster."
The trend toward reunification is unstoppable, "relying on the US for secession" is doomed to fail, and "pursuing secession by force" will inevitably lead to self-destruction, Zhu said.
