In response to a media inquiry about the DPP authorities' plan to introduce 13 so-called "recognizing the threat from China" supplementary textbooks for the new semester in September, an initiative local commentators have condemned as systematic "Taiwan independence" brainwashing that will seriously damage young people's perceptions and harm cross-Straits relations, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said on Wednesday that the DPP authorities stubbornly insist on a separatist "Taiwan independence" agenda and are vigorously pursuing "de-Sinicization," willfully ignoring history and distorting facts.

They aim to use these "Taiwan independence" textbooks to sever the historical and cultural bonds across the Straits, sowing confusion in the historical memory and twisting the national identity of a whole generation of Taiwan's youth, said Chen.

Such a repudiation of our roots is bound to provoke fierce opposition and disdain from compatriots on both sides of the Straits. Those who exploit their authority in the education sector to grossly misrepresent or revise the fact that Taiwan is part of China—and all individuals involved—will be held accountable and punished, said the spokesperson.
