When asked on Wednesday to comment on the recent move by nearly 70 labor unions in Taiwan to form an action alliance accusing the Lai Ching-te administration of failing to hold any consultations with labor groups regarding the impact of US tariffs, and warning that they would take to the streets if they are not allowed to participate in tariff negotiations, Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said that in the face of unilateral and coercive tariff hikes and the deliberate manipulation of the new Taiwan dollar's appreciation, the DPP authorities are servile and submissive.
"Instead of taking effective measures to safeguard the vital interests of the people of Taiwan, the DPP authorities have groveled before the US, even betraying Taiwan's key industries in a shameful act of servility," Zhu told a regular press briefing.
Such behavior, blatantly disregarding people's livelihoods and currying favor with no bottom line, is a typical act of "selling out Taiwan," Zhu noted, adding that it has seriously undermined the interests of people on the island, and the widespread dissatisfaction and protests it has triggered are only natural.
