When asked about US Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Stephen Koehler's claims that "China has intensified its rehearsals for the invasion and blockade of Taiwan," and that the US has included Taiwan in its "deterrence mission area," Zhu Fenglian, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said on Wednesday that China firmly opposes any form of military contact between the US and the Taiwan region, and strongly opposes the US' supply of weapons to Taiwan.
Taiwan is a part of China, and there is no "aggression." The Taiwan question is purely a matter of China's internal affairs and does not allow for any foreign interference, Zhu added.
Zhu said that China urges the US side to adhere to the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques to handle the Taiwan question with utmost caution, to fulfill its commitment of not supporting "Taiwan independence," to avoid sending incorrect signals to the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces and to prevent the schemes of a small number of "Taiwan independence" separatists from undermining the China-US relations.
"We sternly warn the DPP authorities to stop relying on external forces to seek 'Taiwan independence,' abandon the illusion of achieving independence through military means and be aware that any reckless actions will lead to their own destruction," said Zhu.
