In response to a question regarding Lai Ching-te's May 20 address, which made no mention of cross-Straits relations and instead focused on strengthening Taiwan-US ties, Chen Binhua, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said on Wednesday that no matter whether the Taiwan region's leader addresses the topic or not, or what is said and how it is said, none of it can change the fact and status that Taiwan is a part of China, nor can it alter the direction and pace of the development of cross-Straits relations.

Even less can it stop the historic trend that the motherland will and must be reunified, Chen said.

Chen said that he had already commented on the remarks made that day by the Taiwan region's leader, as well as on remarks made in prior media interviews, and made the position and attitude clear.

He emphasized that "Taiwan independence" separatism is fundamentally incompatible with peace across the Taiwan Straits, and confrontation run counter to dialogue and exchanges.

Only by stopping provocative acts of seeking "independence" can there be room for improvement in cross-Straits relations; only by strengthening cross-Straits exchanges and cooperation can tensions in the Taiwan Straits be eased; and only by recognizing that both sides of the Straits belong to one China can there be a foundation for cross-Straits consultation and dialogue, Chen added.

"We will fully implement the Party's overall policy for resolving the Taiwan question in the new era, uphold the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus, unite with the broad masses of Taiwan compatriots, firmly oppose 'Taiwan independence' separatism and external interference, actively expand cross-Straits exchanges and cooperation, continuously deepen cross-Straits integrated development, and work together with one heart to create a bright future of national reunification and national rejuvenation," Chen said.

Answering another question related to the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities on the Taiwan island having been found to organize cyberattacks targeting a tech company in Guangzhou, South China's Guangdong Province, Chen said on Wednesday that the public security authorities have already issued a detailed report, noting he had nothing more to add.

In recent years, under the direction of the DPP authorities, the "Information, Communications and Electronic Force Command" has frequently carried out activities such as cyberattacks and theft of secrets, "Taiwan independence" propaganda and system sabotage against mainland networks, causing interference in the security of mainland cyberspace and other activities, which are extremely bad in nature, Chen said.

Chen said that the public security organs will resolutely safeguard national security and the lawful and legitimate rights and interests of enterprises and the people, and will, in accordance with the law, place a public wanted notice on the above-mentioned persons and resolutely crack down on them through various judicial channels.
