Taipei, Sept. 7 (CNA) Taiwan's defense ministry said Thursday it will closely monitor a planned live-fire military exercise by China later this month off that country's east coast, but the drill is not expected to have any direct impact on Taiwan.

The upcoming drill, part of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) routine annual exercises, will reportedly be held off China's Zhejiang Province, in waters north of Taiwan, according to Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND).

The expected location in the East China Sea is quite far from Taiwan, however, and the exercises are unlikely to have any direct impact on the airspace or waters around Taiwan, the MND said in a statement.

Nonetheless, Taiwan's armed forces will closely monitor the drills and take appropriate action if the need arises, the defense ministry said.

The MND statement was released in response to a notice issued the previous day by China's Maritime Safety Administration (MSA), which said that a live-fire military exercise would be held off the coast of Zhejiang Province from Sept. 16 to Oct. 8.

During that time, a "no-fly zone" will be designated off the coast of Zhejiang, the MSA said, giving the coordinates for the no-fly area.

The notice did not specify, however, what kinds of weapon systems would be used during the three-week military drill.
