Washington, June 21 (CNA) Peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is "a matter of international concern," American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) Chair Laura Rosenberger said Wednesday, as she reiterated Washington's commitment to helping Taiwan defend itself.

Speaking at a virtual discussion hosted by Foreign Policy magazine, Rosenberger talked about Taiwan's role in the transatlantic conversation and explained the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.

"The Taiwan Relations Act itself actually says that peace and stability in the area are in the political, security, [and] economic interests of the United States, and are matters of international concern that has been a fundamental premise of U.S. policy and U.S. approach," said Rosenberger.

Furthermore, ensuring peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait has become a shared goal not only across the Atlantic but also globally, she added.

Rosenberger said leaders in Europe and other democracies were recognizing Taiwan's crucial role as a beacon of democracy both in the Indo-Pacific region and globally.

European leaders had also come to acknowledge the global role Taiwan's large and thriving economy plays in the global economic system, particularly semiconductors, and the importance of waters around Taiwan to global maritime traffic.

However, despite increased recognition of the importance of peace and stability, "there is no change in the basic positions of the G7 members on Taiwan, including stated 'one China' policies and a call for a peaceful resolution" to cross-strait tensions.

Rosenberger said the United States had long been committed to supporting Taiwan's self-defense capability under the Taiwan Relations Act.

This is a commitment that "has been upheld by each [White House] administration since that law was enacted in 1979."

She added that Beijing must know that undermining the status quo in the Taiwan Strait was not just a concern for the United States, but also for "key partners Beijing is reaching out."
