Taipei, April 15 (CNA) Vice President Lai Ching-te (賴清德), who will represent the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in the 2024 presidential election, reiterated the importance of peace between Taiwan and China on Saturday amid cross-strait tensions.
China should treat Taiwan well, as peace is priceless, and war has no winners, Lai said during a campaign rally in southern Taiwan's Tainan City.
China must recognize that an attack on Taiwan would not only harm Taiwan, but would also cause a global catastrophe that would be difficult for China to bear, Lai said.
He pointed out that Taiwan has been the largest foreign investor of China, and has contributed more than US$200 billion to the country over the past few decades, which created job opportunities and provided stability to Chinese society.
As long as it is done on the basis of equality and dignity, Taiwan stands ready to engage in cross-strait exchanges and cooperation, to advance mutual understanding and reconciliation, Lai said.
However, he said, until China renounces the possible use of force to take Taiwan, it is necessary to continue building up the nation's defense capabilities, in order to prepare to resist a Chinese invasion and protect Taiwan.
Lai added that Taiwan must work with like-minded democratic countries to create an effective deterrence against China, and to preserve peace and stability in the world.
