Taipei, Dec. 8 (CNA) A total of nine Chinese military aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and another two entered Taiwan's air defense identification zone (ADIZ) between 6 a.m. Wednesday, and 6 a.m. Thursday, according to the Ministry of National Defense (MND).
Over the 24 hours, the MND saw 27 aircraft and four naval vessels belonging to the People's Liberation Army (PLA) active in the vicinity of Taiwan, with 9 of the aircraft crossing the median line, which for many years functioned as a de facto maritime border, the MND said in a statement.
The aircraft that flew across the median line included four J-10 fighters, four J-16 fighters and a CH-4 UCAV RECCE unmanned aerial vehicle, information released by the MND on its official website showed.
The aircraft that entered Taiwan's southwestern ADIZ were a Y-8 ASW aircraft and a BZK-055 unmanned aerial vehicle, according to the MND.
The armed forces have tasked combat air patrol aircraft, Navy vessels, and land-based missile systems in response to the incursions, the ministry said.
An ADIZ is an area declared by a country to allow it to identify, locate and control approaching foreign aircraft, but it is not part of territorial airspace as defined by international law.
