Taipei, Nov. 10 (CNA) Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) on Thursday denounced a Chinese official for his "blatant lie" that China arranged for Taiwan's participation at the United Nations climate meeting according to its "one-China principle."

MOFA issued a statement strongly condemning Xie Zhenhua (解振華), China's representative to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), for his statement about Taiwan at the 27th Conference of the Parties of the convention, known as COP 27, which runs from Nov 6-18 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.

The Chinese representative told a "blatant lie" and his "abominable behavior" had denigrated the sovereignty of Taiwan, MOFA said in the statement.

During his address to the Climate Implementation Summit at COP 27 on Tuesday, Xie said that China "has made appropriate arrangements for the Taiwan region's participation" in the UNFCCC in line with Beijing's "one-China principle."

Taiwan, officially named the Republic of China (ROC), has been excluded from attending the annual climate summit since it was established in 1995, after withdrawing from the U.N. and being replaced by the People's Republic of China in 1971.

Taiwanese officials and NGOs are only able to participate in some non-official COP sessions in a private capacity via the limited quota of NGO participants due to pressure from China.

The climate summit is the venue where the international community tackles climate change, but the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has "politicized this mechanism," MOFA said.

The CCP regime's continued obstruction of Taiwan's participation in the UNFCCC shows that it places its political interests above the urgent challenge facing the international community to come up with strategies in the fight against climate change, MOFA said.

Meanwhile, MOFA on Thursday expressed thanks to Formosa Club chapters in the Caribbean and Latin America for their support of Taiwan's participation in the UNFCCC.

The two Formosa Club chapters, which have members from 21 countries, including lawmakers, have called for the presence of Taiwan at COP 27 and the country's meaningful participation in the Paris Agreement, according to the ministry.
