Taipei, Oct. 22 (CNA) Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) called on Beijing on Saturday to move away from its "old mindset" of invasion and confrontation after the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) made opposing Taiwan independence part of its party constitution.
The CCP's new leadership lineup should break from the mindset of confronting or even invading Taiwan and resolve its differences with Taiwan in a peaceful, equitable and realistic manner, the MAC said in a statement.
Maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is the shared responsibility of both sides of the strait, the MAC said.
The statement was a response to the amendments to the CCP's Party Constitution that were adopted at the party's 20th National Congress on Saturday.
Among the amendments on Taiwan, which is claimed by Beijing as part of its territory, the CCP vowed to build a state-of-the-art military to ensure the implementation of "one country, two systems" in Taiwan and to firmly oppose and contain Taiwan independence.
"One country, two systems" is an arrangement used by Beijing to rule Hong Kong and Macau while enabling both special administrative regions some degree of autonomy.
The language was stronger compared to that in the amendment to the CCP's party constitution adopted at the 19th National Congress in 2017.
Under the amendment, the CCP pledged to strengthen a sense of unity among all nationals, including people in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and overseas, to facilitate national unification in accordance with the "one country, two systems" formula.
