Tehran (ISNA) - Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani has said in response to a question from journalists regarding Tehran's stance on U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan that respecting national sovereignty of countries is a fundamental principle of the UN Charter.

Kanaani said, "Article 2 of the UN Charter warns the world body's members against any action that would harm the territorial integrity and political independence of other countries".

The Foreign Ministry spokesman added, "Respect for the territorial integrity of other countries is a fundamental principle of the foreign policy of Iran and support for the one-china principle is undeniable in line with this tenet".

Kanaani stated, "The recent destabilizing move of the US regime officials to interference in the internal affairs of the People's Republic of China and to violate the territorial integrity of the country is an example of the US's meddlesome behavior in different regions and countries of the world. He noted that this behavior will only intensify instability and stokes differences, and, as such, it is deplorable.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman noted at the end, "Unilateralism and violating international law and conventions have become an integral part of the US foreign policy and the experience of Washington's withdrawal from multilateral agreements including the Iran nuclear deal, JCPOA, and imposition of inhumane and illegal sanctions on the Iranian people are clear proof of the US violation of its commitments".
